Way of the West: A Wobbly Wander Out Yonder
I just watched Way of the West and, hörrni, this one made me miss the days when dad put on an Eastwood flick on cold Sundays in Sundsvall. Colton Tapp stars as the main fella here, and, I gotta say, he’s trying – really trying. But his cowboy hat looked like something my cousin wore to a country festival in Borlänge, back in ‘09. The big names are miles away here… absent are your Tom Hardy or Leo DiCaprio types. Director Wyeth Clarkson’s got guts, I’ll give him that, but sometimes I wasn’t sure if this would end up a western or just one of those slow walks you take when ICA’s closed and you forgot your mjölk.
The plot? Not super easy to nail down. A bit like catching a trout out in Vättern one blåsigt morning – slippery and wriggly. Our guy’s out for revenge, meets some oddballs, gets testy in the desert, et cetera. Sometimes gloomy, sometimes just confusing – and the dialogue, ja herregud, it’s like they’d only read about cowboys in a book written by someone who’s never seen a horse.
I do love a good western, you know – grew up watching Clint and the old boys whenever we stayed at grandma’s with the smell of kaffe and morotskaka around. This one tried to scratch that itch, and, to be fair, the music sometimes really nailed it. Harmonica bits and creaky boots – sounded like Tuesday night outside a kiosk in Luleå.
But honestly? If you want to feel lost in the prairie, this flick gives you that – not always in a good way. Maybe watch it if you’ve got time and are missing that tumbleweed feeling – but bring some patience. And maybe a fika.
