Pardon My Pups (1934) – Yeah, dogs, childhood rebellion, and Jimmy!

So, “Pardon My Pups”. This is one of those old-school shorts – like, ah, really old, svartvit, barely over 20 minutes. Feels like a lunch break at Konsum back in ’87. Directed by Charles Lamont, who honestly, did a million comedies. And Shirley Temple’s here in a supporting role – tiny, but she’s the real sunshine of the film. Jimmy Butler’s the star though, playing Sonny – the classic all-American kid with a big chunk of attitude. I dunno why, but his hair just reminds me of when granma tried to cut my hair with her giant sewing scissors. Result: katastrof.

It’s a kinda simple plot. Boy wants a puppy, dad says nej, because… horses? I dunno, in Sweden, when I wanted a hamster my pappa just said I had to clean the cage, not buy me a pony instead. There’s this bit where one of the pups is getting bullied and the kid’s gotta save it. Classic feel-good, but with a bit of grit. You can actually hear the old, hissy soundtrack, those poppy noises that make you wanna reach for a cinnamon bun and some O’boy.

I watched this when I was maybe 8? With my cousin Jonas at mormor’s. He cried when the mean man was yelling at the dog. I pretended not to, but, eh, det stack till a bit. There’s that thing, y’know, watching how grownups stomp on kids’ dreams. Sometimes a movie just hits that, even if it’s from another era.

I gotta say, Shirley Temple really steals the show for me. Even back then, you know that kid’s gonna be jäkligt famous. Lamont, Temple, Butler – they got something going here. Worth a fika and 25 minutes, for sure.

Would I rewatch? Maybe at Christmas with värmeljus and everyone’s a bit sentimental. Totally works as a “remember when you were tiny and wanted everything” nostalgia dose.
