Our Relations: Double Trouble with Extra Fika
So, just caught “Our Relations” again (watched it midday Tuesday, rain outside, proper höstväder), and man, what a weird, charming little Laurel & Hardy film this is. I mean, 1936 – that’s basically before Västerås even had a single escalator! Feels ancient but in a cuddly way.
Alright, so you’ve got Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy doing their thing, looking confused and getting tangled up in silly situations, but then – hold onto your mössa – they’re playing their own twin brothers too?! Not sure who came up with that idea, maybe director Harry Lachman had a wild dream after too much sill at julbordet. Producer Hal Roach was behind it, famous for short, sharp comedy – but here he lets the boys run wild with double the nonsense.
Imagine going to ICA, bumping into yourself, and your wife gets cross because your “twin” is handing out surströmming to strangers. The kind of confusion that gives both anxiety and a good skratt. There’s a warmth here, even if it’s all moustaches and suits and those old-timey horns blaring. Makes you kinda miss those old, silent school assemblies we used to have in Gävle – everyone confused and nervous, just like Stan and Ollie.
The slapstick, sure, sometimes it drags a bit (I checked my phone during some gags – guilty!), but the timing between Laurel and Hardy is so oddly comforting. Like, if you ever accidentally sent a text to your boss meant for your best mate – you cringe and laugh at yourself at the same time.
It’s silly as a May afternoon in Skåne and sometimes a bit tired, but it’s got genuine charm. Worth watching just for the boat scene – trust me, you’ll never look at a dock the same way. If you’ve ever felt like two versions of yourself on a Monday, you’ll get it.
