Ditto (2022) – Talking to the Past? E du go eller?

Alright, let’s get into this one. Ditto, directed by Seo Eun-young, isn’t really your average time travel flick, and before you roll your eyes thinking “Har dom gått tillbaka till Back to the Future-nivån nu eller?” – nah. It’s more personal, kind of like when you bump into someone from your högstadiet on an SL train and time just collapses, except with walkie-talkies and more tears.

The cast is wild – Yeo Jin-goo (shame if you haven’t seen him since his Monster days) and Cho Yi-hyun make this so much more than just a high concept gimick. There’s Kim Hye-yoon too, throwing around that energy you only find in people who’ve missed their last Pendeltåg and just run with it. Seo Eun-young, the director, does this thing where she actually lets the film breathe – like, some scenes just stare at you. Reminded me a bit of Roy Andersson’s patience, though this is way less Swedishly depressive. Still got me thinking about Fåret Shaun for some reason.

I gotta admit, the sounds got to me first. That old-school radio static fuzz, makes me think of my pappa’s gamla radio he always kept next to the köksvasken. And, honest, the first “hello?” they toss out through the crackling air- that hit different. You ever sent a text to someone at 2:47 in the morning and hoped it’d land, then put your phone face down? Same vibe.

If I’m being real, I connected more to the nostalgia than the love drama. Their whole thing about regrets and missed chances, I guess it’s universal, but sometimes a bit för mycket. But isn’t that what makes these stories linger? You end up thinking about someone you haven’t seen since Midsommarfest 2011. Or maybe just missing a bus.

So, is Ditto a perfect movie? Nah, not for everyone. But it’s got heart, and sometimes that’s enough to give you a lump in your throat. Pass the kanelbulle.
