Come Clean: The Movie Where Sincerity Feels a Little Too Real
If someone had told me when I sat down on a rainy Thursday in March that “Come Clean” would leave me feeling like I’d just spent the night trying to explain myself to my grandma after missing Sunday dinner, I might’ve picked another film. But, hey, that’s life. Directed by Greta Gerwig – yes that Greta, and with Saoirse Ronan (honestly, is she in everything now?) and Daniel Kaluuya (he’s got this look, like he knows your secrets) – it’s one of those films that pokes at your insides. Like an itchy wool sweater you can’t take off.
I got this strange flashback halfway through. Mum had this saying when I was little, “ingen ko på isen,” which is basically, “no worries,” until there’s definitely a cow, and it’s very much on the bloody ice. That’s this feel – you’re watching these people try to keep life together, and all the cows in their lives are already skidding around. I dunno. Maybe that’s why it hit a nerve for me? The pain of pretending everything’s fine.
The music’s good. Bit like listening to Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” in a dim kitchen, half past midnight. The cinematography’s way less flashy than I expected. Sometimes I thought, wow, has the camera operator even had coffee today? But then, sometimes it hits hard – like that kitchen scene, the awkward toast, the half-lit faces. You see yourself, you know? Or at least bits of yourself.
I’m mixed, honestly. Some parts feel sharp, and others…well, a bit dragged out. Still, there’s that raw honesty you don’t get every weekend. If you ever lied to someone you love (and mate, who hasn’t?), maybe give it a go. Feels more like a confession than a movie, which I suppose is the point.
